Russ Denmark (Super Pro), Blake Furman (Pro), and Kern Roberts (Street Money) led a contingent of winners Saturday at Skyview Drags IHRA sanctioned 1/8-mile drag strip. Joining the winners in victory lane were Rick Woodruff (Bike/Sled), Amelia Scofield (Juniors) and Christian Taylor (Teen Championship).
Denmark, racing out of Ovid, drove his new rear engine big-block dragster to victory over the too quick run of runner-up Alan Salisbury, Binghamton, who campaigns a beautiful Chevy Nova. Denmark’s winning numbers were a perfect 4.94 on a 4.94 at 138.98 with a .540 reaction light to Salisbury’s better .514 reaction, but too quick 5.92 on a 5.95 at 116.87. It was Denmark’s first win of the season as he recently sold his door slammer Pontiac Firebird in lieu of the new dragster. Erick Larsen, Cortland, who drives a beautiful Pontiac GTO, took home semi-final honors.
In Pro competition, Blake Furman posted his first win of the year in the ultra-competitive class with his Camptown based Plymouth Roadrunner. Furman’s final round .514 reaction coupled with a 7.47 on a 7.44 at 92.39 put away runner-up and defending Pro champ Shane Garinger, New Albany, who delivered a game .560, 6.90 on a 6.86 dial at 99.29. Camptown’s Zane Furman, Blake’s father, took home semi-honors in his Plymouth Roadrunner.
In Street Eliminator, Kenneth Roberts cranked out another winning effort behind the wheel of his Ulster-based Chrysler Cordoba. Roberts victim this time was Kathy Lapcevich, Owego, in her supercharged Pontiac GTX . Roberts went 10.02 on a 10.00 at 71.77 in the final with a .635 light to turn back Lapcevich’s second-best .660, and too quick 8.13 on a 8.16 at 83.53 effort. Semi-finals honors were earned by Paul Cody, VanEtten.
Junior Dragster was a familiar face, as Amelia Scofield scored her fourth win of the season in th4e Junior Class in her Spencer-based Jr. Dragster. Her final round opponent was Jarod Baker, Newfield, who broke in the final round half way down the track. Scofield went 9.19 on a 9.17 at 70.41 for the win. Bryden Roefs, Unadilla, was the semi-finalist.
Teen Championship racing found to New Yorkers meeting in the final with Christian Taylor taking the victory with a 12.90 on a 12.66 at 47.11 with a .958 light to defeat the 11.44 on a 10.64 at 67.83 with a .614 effort of runner-up Dennis Chilles.
