Troy Rotary Presents Awards to Students in Service and Academic Excellence

On Sunday June 20, 2010, the Troy Rotary Club recognized several high school students at their second annual Troy Rotary Awards Ceremony. The presentation was held at W.R. Croman Elementary School in the afternoon, followed by an ice cream and dessert reception. Rotarians, award recipients and their families were invited to this event, which featured a brief keynote speech by Jennifer Swain, Troy High School ’90. Ms. Swain, Executive Director of the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance, discussed her work in the field of community service through the Rotary and throughout her academic and professional career.

The first set of awards recognized the Top Ten Academic Seniors in the Troy High School Class of 2010. The second category, entitled the “Service Above Self” Award, was granted to individuals in the class who exemplified outstanding service within the community. Applicants had to meet a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service, as well as explain why service is important to them and to the local community. This year they had several applicants and after careful review by a subcommittee of Troy Rotarians, they were proud to present this award to two recipients. This year’s “Service Above Self” Award was granted to Crystal Jackson and Christopher Stroup. Crystal Jackson spent over 100 hours of volunteer service as a counselor at Camp Brule. As a counselor for 4 years, Crystal was responsible for ensuring the wellbeing and safety of the 6th grade campers. In addition, Crystal dedicated numerous hours of service through Student Council, helping with bake sales, food drives and fundraisers. Christopher Stroup also served as a Camp Brule Counselor, and was a Basketball Youth Counselor. His responsibilities as a counselor were to ensure timely organization and scheduling of camp activities for the 6th graders. Chris helped instruct 3rd-8th graders at Basketball camp for three summers.

The following students were recognized for their outstanding academic excellence, ranking them in the Top Ten of Troy High School Class of 2010 (in alphabetical order): Artie Holdren, Leanne Hoover, Crystal Jackson, Jason LeVan, Meghan Manning, Courtney Mattocks, Katherine Passmore, Caitlin Pratt, Christopher Stroup, and Brianna Wenger. Congratulations to all the recipients for their amazing accomplishments, and the Rotary wishes them all the best of luck in their future endeavors.
