The 24th Annual Troy Fair Draft Horse Show is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 25 at the Gate 3 show ring and will be dedicated to the late Wendell Seeley. Wendell was a founding member of the Endless Mountains Draft Horse Club and instrumental in re-establishing a draft horse show at the fair. He was a supporter and competitor with his Percherons for many years and continued to support the show even after he no longer competed.
Special guest, the 2010 Pennsylvania Draft Horse and Mule Queen, Kate Bassett, will be handing out ribbons. Kate was introduced as the 2010 Queen at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January. She is a competitor as well, so you may see her driving a cart or a team. Judging this year’s show is Denis Boncek, Owego, NY. James Howell of Brick, NJ will once again be the emcee. The food stand will be open, manned by Troy Boy Scout Troop 4049.
The day’s events begin with the halter classes and the naming of the Supreme Champion selected from all the Grand Champions, then moves on to the hitch classes. Throughout the hitch classes there will be various obstacle courses and log pulls where the teamsters can show off their driving expertise to try and win the bragging rights for the next year. The usual breeds are expected to be showcased – Belgian, Percheron and Clydesdale as well as some of the newer Haflinger and Spotted Draft breeds.
Admission to the Draft Horse Show is free, and the parking is free. There will also be opportunities to participate in prize basket raffles. The day of the draft horse is definitely not over – come and see young teens competing just as hard and just as well as the “older” teamsters.
All draft horse owners are encouraged to bring their horses and participate. Contact show coordinators April DeGrande at (570) 827-3013 or Rosemary Wynott at (570) 297-2598. You can also visit troyfair.com for more information.
