My search for the best chicken wings ended right here in Troy at Anthony’s Bar and Grill. Why at Anthony’s? Gregory Sawyer has been the cook there for a little over two years. There’s just something special about the wings he makes, whether they are hot and spicy, mild, garlic or grilled. The savory flavor flows through each piece, and tantalizes every taste bud around your tongue.
Gregory has a long history of cooking which began at his home in Troy at the age of 13. He enjoyed helping his mom with the cooking for his family of seven. After graduating from Troy High School, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. There he was the distinguished cook and baker for the officers, gaining him seven years of experience.
After the Navy, Gregory returned to his home ground in Pennsylvania, working at several places before finding his niche at Anthony’s. His first job was as a cook at Beeman’s Family Restaurant in Sayre. After that he did bus boy duties at Olive Garden. But it was cooking and baking that he really wanted to do. The time and place were right for him to return to his home town and start cooking at Anthony’s. His specialties go beyond the chicken wings as he prepares steaks, burgers, fries, chicken fingers and a variety of sandwiches. He even serves up some great desserts.
Gregory works five days a week at Anthony’s, from late morning until the kitchen closes, and sometimes that isn’t until after 9 p.m. He enjoys what he’s doing, but his true love is baking. Eventually he wants to have his own bakery.
In addition to cooking at Anthony’s, Gregory helps out at the register and sometimes serves the delicious meals he makes. The chicken wings come with celery and blue cheese, and Gregory adds a smile to the steaming platter!
