The third annual Smithfield Township Summer Fest will be taking place on July 14 at the former VFW grounds in East Smithfield. Summer Fest is a one-day, community event that will feature live music, food and craft vendors, children’s games, storytelling and fireworks. New this year is a dunk tank with AASD Superintendent Craig Stage participating, as well as other local figures. Gates open at 4 p.m. at 3106 Rolling Hills Rd.
This year’s entertainment includes a square dance with Len Souto and the Gypsys from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Veterans’ Hall. Justin Raynor and Chris Warren will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. on the main stage, and then Double Take will take the stage with some old country, classic rock, and Broadway classics from 7 to 10 p.m. Fireworks top off the evening at 9:30 p.m.
Justin Raynor began playing after college. His first gig was a benefit for a local farmer whose barn burned. A year later he began booking shows at local establishments. In 2014 he teamed up with childhood friend and local drummer Chris Warren. Raynor and Warren play a variety of music including country and southern rock.
Double Take was formed in 1991 by former Down Under drummer Joe Lopreste and keyboardist Austin Wallace. Double Take plays clubs, outdoor concerts and festivals, playing a variety of music from classic rock to country spanning more than 50 years.
Smithfield Township acquired the former East Smithfield Veterans Hall and Grounds in February of 2008. The grounds were donated to the township with the request that no taxpayer dollars be used to support the grounds. Proceeds from Summer Fest benefit the grounds and hall.
Pre-sale tickets can be purchased for $8 at the Smithfield Township office by calling (570) 596-7770 ext. 1, or at Bryan’s Meat, East Smithfield Health Care and Up In Arms Shooting Supplies, all in East Smithfield, and at Yale’s Music Shop in Athens, Pa. Tickets at the gate are $10 each and children 12 and under are free.
No coolers, pets or alcohol are allowed on the premises.
