The Bradford County Trophy Deer and Bear Club’s 2018 Big Game Awards Banquet will take place at Alparon Park (Troy Fairgrounds) on Saturday evening, Sept. 22. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required.
The Bradford County Trophy Deer and Bear Club is an organization dedicated to measuring, keeping records of, and bringing to public attention the outstanding big game animals taken by hunters in Bradford County.
As one of the top big game harvest counties in Pennsylvania, Bradford County is rich in deer and bear hunting traditions, and this 12th annual event is a celebration of this hunting heritage.
Many large specimens are taken in Bradford County each year that qualify for the state and national record books. Trophy-class animals for this event have been entered in nine of the Club’s 15 big game awards categories.
Archery hunters generally submit more entries than any other category, and this year is no exception with 38 of the 51 hunter-taken trophies tagged by archers. The top entry in the Typical Whitetail Archery category was taken on Oct. 3, 2017 in South Creek Township. That ten-pointer gross scored 155-5/8 with a 151-5/8 net.
An Orwell Township whitetail taken on Nov. 27, 2017 is the largest entered in the Typical Deer Gun category. That 7X8 gross scored 170-3/8 with a 154-5/8 net. A junior license hunter has captured the top spot in the Youth category with a Canton Township eight-pointer scoring 137-0/8. A Troy Township hunter has tagged the largest black bear entered in the Black Bear archery category with a 225 pounder scoring 19-1/16. And, a Windham Township gun hunter bagged a Non-typical deer scoring 164-2/8.
Also, a shed hunter picked up a matching set of antlers that will take over the number one spot in that category. Those antlers gross scored 163-1/8 with a 156-4/8 non-typical net. That score reflects no inside spread measurement.
One of the most talked about whitetails taken in Bradford County last year, and certainly one of the most impressive mounts in this year’s display of trophies, will become the new No. 1 in the Non-typical Archery category. Tagged by a hunter in Franklin Township on Nov. 10, 2017, that buck grew 18 scoreable points. The net score at 180-3/8 will unseat the 173-0/8 Springfield Township buck taken by Kyle Jackson in 2016, and it will now rank as one of the top 25 non-typical whitetails ever recorded in the Pennsylvania Record Book. Don’t miss out seeing this deer and many other outstanding trophies on display.
There will also be a number of special activities taking place during the banquet including the drawing for the Lucky 7 Gun and Prize Raffle, antler scoring contest, sponsor exhibits, women and youth events, silent auction, door prizes and more.
The Club will also acknowledge those hunters who made the 2017/2018 hunting season their “First Deer” year. So if you or someone you know bagged their first deer (buck or doe) during this past season, contact Roger Kingsley at (570) 297-2489 for more details.
