SRU Elementary School students, faculty, and staff were in a giving spirit this holiday season.
The school raised over $1,000 with its Nickels for St. Nick drive. Proceeds will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
The donation drive concluded with five staff members taking a pie to the face at a school assembly to show gratitude for the generosity of the students.
Additionally, students donated non-perishable food items to support the Helping Hands Food Pantry and the East Smithfield United Methodist Church.
Finally, kindergarten and first grade students collected pet supplies, food, and toys to donate to the Animal Care Sanctuary in Milan. Students enjoyed meeting some pets while contributing to a worthy cause.
“We feel it is important for our students to think about others, especially at this time of year,” said Principal Peter Henning.
She added, “Our District Vision reads: Athens Area School District is a small community preparing learners to make a big impact as citizens and leaders in a global economy. It is fun for students to see the impact they can make at such a young age.”
