The Troy Thursday Study Club met on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Troy Vet’s Club. The members were in the holiday mood while having social time and enjoying a delicious holiday luncheon prepared by the kitchen at the Troy Vet’s Club.  The tables were decorated with festive holiday arrangements.

Prior to the afternoon’s program, the Troy Study Club members were blessed with holiday piano music played by members Fran Gardiner and Brenda Brewer in duet, adorned with their Santa hats. Then this became a trio on one piano, as Nancy Blackwell Oldroyd joined them. All three had reindeer headbands on, which added to their festive spirits and talents!

Abby Werlock introduced Barb Andrus, a well-known and reputable local flower expert. Barb explained to the members the process of training and schooling she had to participate in, in order to attain her current status of being a National Flower Show Judge. Charlotte Lyon, who also has an interest in flowers and design, accompanied her.

Both presenters set a theme for the day, entitled Christmas in Red. Barb went over the Principles and Elements of Flower Design, and explained how judging a flower arrangement submitted in a flower show would have to be critiqued. She also indicated the various divisions that displays could be categorized in.

Prior to their presentation, tickets were put at member place settings. Four arrangements were on display that would be samples for everyone to judge.  Members’ role-played being judges, concentrating on the Elements of Design.  Tickets were drawn at the conclusion of the program, and four lucky members had a Christmas arrangement to take home. Everyone concluded that much creativity was necessary for floral design.

The business meeting, which followed the program, opened with the club reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer. President Carol Lane opened the meeting by reading a poem entitled “Christmas Giving,” written by Iris W. Bray.

The Minutes of the October 2018 meeting were read by Secretary Soni Haflett, and will stand as read. Treasurer Carol Zuber gave the monthly Treasurer’s Report, and it will be submitted for financial review.

Committee Reports were given as follows. Remembrance Committee, Barb Zaleski, reported that 14 November and December birthdays were recognized.  Get well cards were also sent to members not feeling well.

Marilyn Bohlayer, Scrapbook Committee, continues to update the Troy Thursday Study Club Scrapbook. She suggested including any obituaries of deceased members in the book, and to make sure she gets a copy to include when available.

Fran Gardiner, Town Beautification chairperson, indicated the planters have been changed to reflect the Christmas holiday theme.

President Lane thanked Julie Leffler for the decorations and making reservations for this month’s Study Club Meeting.

A special thank you was given to the holiday pianists.

President Lane announced the next meeting will be on Jan. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Troy Sale Barn. The program will be Greener Pastures-Sustainable Agriculture and will be presented by Nicole Harris.

President Lane concluded the meeting by reading “Thoughts and Simple Joys.”  She wished everyone a Merry Christmas and looks forward to seeing all in the New Year.
