The Bradford-Wyoming Co. Literacy Program invites the public to its Annual Recognition Banquet planned for Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion, located at 912 South Main St. in Towanda.
The guest speaker for the banquet will be Chuck Carver, owner of WATS Broadcasting, Inc. (WATS/WAVR Radio in Sayre). He is the creator of the award-winning Scholarship Challenge high school quiz, which will mark its 40th season in January of 2020.
Carver is a 1976 graduate of the Ohio State University of Journalism. He has won more than 100 state and national awards for broadcast programming excellence, including 11 “Best Newscast in the State” honors in both New York State and Pennsylvania.
Carver currently serves the Wilawana, Pa. and Chemung, N.Y. United Methodist Churches as a certified Lay Minister.
Established in 1980 as a special project of the Friends of the Bradford Co. Library, the Bradford-Wyoming Co. Literacy Program trains volunteer tutors and provides free and confidential “one to one” tutoring in basic reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language. The Bradford-Wyoming Co. Literacy Program, located at 200 Main St., Suite 5 in Towanda, serves both Bradford and Wyoming Counties and is an affiliate of ProLiteracy.
The Bradford-Wyoming Co. Literacy Program is a member agency of the United Way of Bradford County.
According to ProLiteracy, the national volunteer literacy organization headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y., more than 36 million adults in the United States cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third grade level. The American Legion is graciously providing the banquet at no charge to the Literacy Program, but reservations are required. Persons should call the Literacy Program office at (570) 297-3375 or email email@example.com to make reservations. The deadline for reservations is June 3.
