Girls rule at Fair Queen Competition

Wearing a crown can be a rewarding experience, and Tioga County ladies between the ages of 16 and 20 (as of June 1, 2019), will have the opportunity to vie for that honor by participating in the Tioga County Fair Queen Contest.

The winner will represent the Fair, and receive $500 with an additional $500 scholarship from WOC Energy at the end of her reign, provided she has completed her reign in good standing.

If the Queen has not yet graduated from High School the Tioga County Fair will hold the scholarship money and will issue a check when the Queen provides the fair with documentation that she is enrolled in a college, university or trade school.

The Fair Queen is eligible to represent Tioga County at the State Fair Queen Contest in Hershey in January 2020 and will receive a $250 gift card from Dunham’s Department Store towards the purchase gowns or business attire for the state fair competition. Winner of the state competition receives a scholarship of $2,500 and reigns as Pennsylvania’s Fair Queen for one year. The Tioga County Fair Queen Runner-up is awarded $200. If there is a 2nd and 3rd alternate, they will split the prize money.

Candidates must reside in Tioga County, must be single, never been married, have no children, and not marry or become pregnant during her reign. Past local or state winners are not eligible.

The winner must be available to reign at the Tioga County Fair, which takes place Aug. 5-10. Meeting people and having fun are all part of the Fair Queen’s agenda as her duties range from passing out ribbons and trophies to welcoming dignitaries visiting the Tioga County Fair.

Judging is based on an essay written in 300 words or less on “What My Fair Means to My Community.” Candidates will also be expected to present a three to five minute speech on the topic, “Why You Should Come to My Fair.”

During the stage / interview portion of the competition, candidates will be required to answer random questions, which will allow the judges to see each candidate’s ability to answer impromptu questions. Questions could be on the fair, agriculture, recent news, or the candidate’s integrity. Other qualities candidates will be judged on include poise, neatness and cleanliness, appearance, and the ability to communicate (speaking ability and knowledge of fairs).

Each candidate must be willing to donate two hours of volunteer service to the fair, be available and willing to promote the Tioga County Fair at suitable events throughout her reigning year, and be available to attend the State Fair Queen Contest in Hershey in January 2020.

Applications for entry are included in the Fair books distributed at local banks and businesses, on the Fair’s website,

Mail entries to Courtney Smith, 71 Grinnell Lane, Liberty, Pa. 16930, with a postmark no later than July 19; must include a brief autobiography on a 3 x 5 card, along with a recent photo. Judging will be done on Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. Crowning of the 2019 Tioga County Fair Queen will take place the same day at 6 p.m. in the Main Building on the Tioga County Fairgrounds.
