Sally Schultz was a nurse diagnosed with Lupus, as well as rheumatoid arthritis. She researched the best means of health for herself through diet and cleansing, and centered her lifestyle on what she had learned.
As a very spiritual person, Schultz wanted to share her knowledge in order to help others with the same health issues. So, in 1983 she opened Schultz’s Natural Foods, located on Route 6 in Wysox.
Schultz did more than help just those with Lupus and arthritis. She provided a means for gaining a healthy lifestyle in her community. She also influenced her daughter, Mary Theresa, to follow in her footsteps.
Mary Theresa met David Jurnack at Mansfield University. They were involved in a snowball fight at David’s fraternity house and later discovered that, ironically, their moms were both Sally. What began as a snowball fight became a relationship that would continue what Sally Schultz had started.
David and Mary Theresa married and returned to the area after military service. They took over Schultz’s Natural Foods, changing the name to Jurnack’s, Naturally!
Today, as they run the store, David and Mary Theresa carry on the same philosophy that started Schultz on her healthy quest.
“Mary Theresa is the brains of the operation,” said David, “and I’m the backbone.”
Mary Theresa is a Doctor of Naturopathy and a certified Natural Health Professional. She is constantly researching and taking classes to keep up on the latest holistic offerings.
Products that David and Mary Theresa offer their customers include dietary supplements, health and beauty aids, essential oils, make up, tea, bulk herbs and spices, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and much in the way of gluten free. They also have frozen and refrigerated items. Their products are organic as much as available.
People often come to them for advice. They know their products or know where to find out more information about those products. They can steer their customers in the right direction.
“We try to educate,” said David. “We try to provide resources to help people improve their quality of life.”
Jurnack’s, Naturally! is located on Route 6 upon entering Wysox from Towanda, after crossing the bridge. They are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Mary Theresa has hours available by appointment for nutritional consultations. For more information, call (570) 265-9641 during store hours or visit their website, www.jurnacks.com.
David and Mary Theresa Jurnack have come a long way since that snowball fight so many years ago. And together they are carrying on a healthy tradition that Sally Schultz so lovingly started in her community.
“Mary Theresa and I have walked four Caminos together and work with each other side by side,” said David, “and we still like each other.”
