“Canton VFW donates to a lot of charities,” said Shawn Callahan, Canton VFW 714 adjutant.
According to Callahan, their main charity is “National Home” which supports veteran families. They have a school that is VFW funded for children of veterans.
In January 2020, Callahan and Post Quartermaster Steve Wheeler decided to have a raffle as a fundraiser. They wanted something really special as a prize. They went to Bill Watkins, owner of Hess Equipment in Canton to purchase a Kioti Mechron side by side for the prize. It brought in enough ticket sales to pay for the side by side and have the rest donated to charities.
“I want to give a shout out to the Midway Truck Stop, Aif’s Beer Distributor, members and officers of the VFW, Canton Moose Lodge, and Baldwin’s Hardware,” said Callahan. “Without their help during the pandemic we would not have been able to make our goal.”
On Saturday, Sept. 19, the winning ticket was drawn at the Canton Moose.
When Randy Gilliland received the call that he had won, at first he didn’t believe it and said, “No I didn’t! You’re kidding!”
After he talked to Callahan and realized it was the truth, he was pretty excited.
Gilliland was presented with the side-by-side prize on Friday, Sept. 26 at Hess Equipment in Canton. Canton VFW Post Commander Scott Wheeler, Quartermaster Steve Wheeler, and Callahan were there for this special event.
When asked what he was going to do since it was going to be a beautiful weekend, he said, “I’m going to ride it!
