Book Group at Burnside Bridge, Antietam National Battlefield
After finishing a season of Civil War fiction, the Allen F. Pierce Free Library Book Group will meet to read five historical novels. Beginning in September and ending in December, the group will convene at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September through December, except in December when the meeting will be on the second Tuesday. The Allen F. Pierce Free Library will provide the books, and the discussions will be again be facilitated by Abby Werlock, Associate Professor Emerita of American Literature at St. Olaf College.
Participants will discuss five novels, two set in the United States, one England, one in India and one in China. The titles include “Sally Hemings” by Barbara Chase Ribaud (28 September); “Ragtime” by E. L. Doctorow and “Young Bess” by Margaret Irwin (26 October); “The Good Earth” by Pearl Buck (23 November); and “The Far Pavilions” by M. M. Kaye (14 December). All five novels appear on classic historical fiction lists.
