Bradford County holds 4-H Dairy Day

On June 26, the Bradford County 4-H Program held a Dairy Day at John and Denise Feusner’s Farm to help 4-Hers advance their skills with their 4-H dairy animals. With the help of a former 4-Her Allison Waltemyer, the 4-Hers learned how to choose, wash, and show a calf.

Once everyone arrived they were split into groups and given “monopoly money” and pedigrees for all the calves available to work with. After they all had a few minutes to look over the pedigrees and the animals they had the chance to take the money they were given and try to buy the animal of their choice in a mock sale. Once the mock sale was finished and each group had an animal to work with, the 4-Hers washed their animal. After the washing, they let them dry while they ate lunch and went over ethics training.

Following lunch, the 4-Hers started fitting their animals as if they were getting ready to take them to a show. Allison did a small demonstration and allowed the kids to do most of it on their own, answering questions and helping whenever needed. Once they were all clipped and ready for showing, they took them out and Allison did a small demonstration on how to show. When she was finished, they started the mock show so the kids could get used to how a real show would go.

The 4-Hers had fun while learning some new things they might not have known before. A special thanks is extended to the Feusners for letting them come to their farm for Dairy Day.
