Guthrie expands Cancer Center services
Sayre, PA – The Guthrie Cancer Center is please to introduce three new hematology/oncology specialists – Drs. Aref Agheli, Shamila Garg and Ashish Sangal. These physicians will see patients in Guthrie offices located in Sayre and Wellsboro, Pa. and in Corning, NY. A new Section Chief, Philip Lowry, will be joining the Cancer Center team in the near future.
Aref Agheli, MD, LMCC, is available to see patients in Guthrie’s Corning and Sayre offices. He served as Chief Fellow, Division of Hematology and Oncology at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY prior to joining Guthrie. He earned his medical degree from Urmia University of Medical Sciences, Urmia, West Azerbaijan, Iran, and completed residency training at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Agheli is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada. Dr. Agheli’s specialty interests include lung cancer, gynecology oncology, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and other hematologic malignancies.
Shamila Garg, MD, is also available to see patients in Guthrie’s Corning and Sayre offices. Prior to joining Guthrie, Dr. Garg was Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale
University and a staff physician in Hematology/Medical Oncology at the Yale VA Hospital in Connecticut. She also served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and staff Hematologist/Oncologist at Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Garg earned her medical degree from Punjabi University, India in 1987. She did her residency and completed fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Garg is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology. Her specialty interests include breast cancer, lung cancer, clinical research, and teaching.
Ashish Sangal, MD, is available to see patients in Guthrie’s Sayre and Wellsboro offices. Prior to joining Guthrie Dr. Sangal was chief fellow in Hematology and Oncology at Brookdale University Hospital, State University of New York, Brooklyn, NY prior to joining Guthrie. Dr. Sangal earned his medical degree from Coimbatore Medical College, Dr. MGR University, Tamil Nadu, India, and completed a residency in internal medicine at Brookdale University Hospital, Brooklyn, NY. During his residency he was named Intern of the Year as well as Chief Resident. Dr. Sangal is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is certified by the
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He is a member of the American Society of Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Dr. Sangal’s specialty interests include breast cancer, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer.
